Mama Meets...Mama Designs
As a Mama to two little people, I'm always on the look out for stylish yet practical baby products. I seem to spend a lot of my time in my local Jo Jo Maman Bebe store browsing the shelves for the next 'must-buy' item! It was only when I was scrolling through instagram during a 'middle-of-the-night feed' that I came across the Cellular Blankets and the gorgeous Babasac - a 2-in-1 multi tog sleeping bag - and I had to have them! The woman behind this and many more gorgeous products is Keira. She launched Mama Designs seven years ago when she felt self conscious about breastfeeding in public. When she looked for and couldn't find a discreet breastfeeding cover she set about creating one. She now has a whole range of products all designed as a direct response to problems she came across as a mum. MGH is totally hooked and we couldn't wait to meet the Mama behind the designs! Can you tell us what Mama Designs is all about?
I launched the business, which was then called Mamascarf, 8 years ago. After having my baby boy and feeeling self conscious about breastfeeding in public I tried to buy a cover and, when I couldn't find one, I decided to create one. I wanted something that was stylish as well as being practical. Eight years on and we have a full range of products for babies and mama's all combining style and practicality.
As a busy Mama, how did you go about setting up your own business?
It was really tough in the first year or so as I was working in the evenings, had a full time job and a baby. I knew that I wanted to work for myself to have more time with Sam, and that was what spurred me on. I didn't really know what I was doing so there were lots of mistakes along the way!
What inspires you?
I am inspired by the amazing number of women out there who are carving out a life to suit them, to be able to work flexibly around their families. Many of them running businesses while juggling childcare.
What's your 'can't live without' as a Mama and as Keira?
As a mama I love Kokoso coconut oil which is wonderful on babies skin but I also use it on my not so little babies when they have dry skin. As me, chocolate!!
For any Mama out there thinking about setting up her own business, what advice would you give?
It will be hard at times, but it will also be the most amazing thing you can do. I am so grateful to be able to do what I want when I want it and spend all of the holidays with my children. I could not go back to working for someone else now. If you have an idea for a business or a product, what have you got to lose?
What's the best piece of advice you've been given as both a Mama and business owner?
As a mama to not look at what everyone else is doing, to do what is right for you. There can feel like a lot of pressure on new mums. I think it is important to remember this.
As a business owner, to outsource what you can to allow your business to grow. Outsourcing has really helped me and I need to do more of it this year!
What's next for Mama Designs?
We are just about to launch some swaddle muslins in monochrome pineapple to match our Babasac and exhibit at Bubble London and there will be more products launching later in the year! We also have a very exciting shoot planned next month with an amazing stylist in a fantastic location. Lots going on!
